Notes

"The enemy, annoyed at the fact that we had penetrated so far through his line, began shelling and mortaring ferociously. A number of A Squadron members, without a tank, sat on the ground between a tank and the earth mound at the base of a hedge. On the other side of the hedge was a Rifle Brigade Bren carrier, loaded with mortar ammunition. The next minute there was an almighty explosion as a German shell made a direct hit on the carrier. When the smoke and dust cleared, Frank Moss, who had been sitting opposite me, had slumped forward with a large hole through his chest and died immediately. Harry O'Malley, my driver and Ken Payne, gunner, had suffered shrapnel wounds, had gone to the first aid post and were eventually evacuated to England."

Sgt Bertie McCully, A Squadron.
