"The enemy, annoyed at the fact that we had penetrated so far through his line, began shelling and mortaring ferociously. A number of A Squadron members, without a tank, sat on the ground between a tank and the earth mound at the base of a hedge. On the other side of the hedge was a Rifle Brigade Bren carrier, loaded with mortar ammunition. The next minute there was an almighty explosion as a German shell made a direct hit on the carrier. When the smoke and dust cleared, Frank Moss, who had been sitting opposite me, had slumped forward with a large hole through his chest and died immediately." Sgt Bertie McCully, A Squadron.
