As 2603 Cpl EF Woodland, 1/9th Battalion London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles), he fought in the 1st and 2nd Battles of Ypres and at Gommecourt. He was taken prisoner on 1 Jul 1916 and interned at Dulmen and Minden, Holland. He was repatriated via Hull aboard SS Porto on 22 Nov 1918.
