Notes

The C Sqr ARV had been called forward to recover a Sherman tank which had become stuck in a farm hedge. The location was on the extreme eastern edge of the allied forces, probably in the area of La Bijude (Carpiquet Airfield and the occupying German troops were plainly visible). As the fitters started to work there was a sudden Nebelwerfer attack and Smudger received a shrapnel wound to the chest. He was evacuated to England but rejoined the Regiment later.
