Notes

George was in the C Sqr Fitters' half-track when it was ambushed between the village of Presles and the climb up to the Perrier ridge. The half-track took a direct hit from an H.E. shell. The incident is described in the 23H Story Page 96+ and a full account is here.

"The leading fitters' halftrack had been destroyed by a shell, had slewed round and blocked the rest of the convoy. The halftrack belonged to C Squadron and fitter Sergeant George Beresford, ever willing, always the last man out of those Yorkshire bogs, had been killed."

'Monkey Business - The Memoirs of General Sir Cecil Blacker', page 86.

The CWGC website gives George's mother's name as Kelly. That is incorrect.
