Notes

"I had to take our troop across an open space very fast for it was the access to a blown bridge. We got between the houses and started taking it in turns in purposefully erratic time to pop out fire of 75mm HE and reverse like hell. We could see the KSLI start their escape.

My turn, so forward, fired and then a black out burst and I was hit in the face. Gave the order to reverse but felt I might have lost my right eye for I could not see and blood was getting into my mike, so mechanically I followed the drill and handed over to my operator, Salby, and the troop should withdraw."

Capt John Steinhart. The incident took place in Antwerp on 5 Sep 1944..
