"John Malseed was the son of a doctor in Northern Ireland, who originally intended to follow his father into that profession. On leaving school in 1942, he gained a place to study medicine at Edinburgh but, thinking that the war would only last another year, decided to take what would now be called a gap year.

Being a motor cycling enthusiast he volunteered to join the army as a dispatch rider (there was no conscription in Northern Ireland), but arrived in the 23rd Hussars via the Royal Artillery and Sandhurst."
